What is Sport Massage?
The beauty of sports massage is that there is a style for each stage of your training program:
- Pre-event : to prepare the body for physical activity
- Post-event : to prevent sports injuries
- Maintenance: to maintain optimal physical condition
The perfect preparation for a big run or sporting event. A pre-event sports massage has the ability to relax, stretch and increase the mobility of joints ahead of physical activity. With confidence in your body feeling and functioning at its best, you can lie back and focus on getting your head in the game!
These are generally performed anywhere from 1 to 2 days prior to, or even on the day of the event itself. During this sports massage, we prime your body for action focusing on increasing the blood flow and, in turn, nutrients to the muscles. This is achieved through faster techniques which generate heat.
The ideal way to promote healing and improve recovery time. A post-event sports massage involves a deeper and slower technique which releases toxins to , realign muscle fibres and relax overused muscle groups.
For best results, this should be performed as soon as possible following strenuous physical activity, no later than 1 to 2 days after the event.
This is a great opportunity to increase blood circulation to sore and fatigued muscle. By increasing the blood flow to these muscles we can increase the removal of waste products which are produced during strenuous activity, thus reducing the symptoms of fatigue and promoting a faster recovery.
Can you afford to be sidelined with injuries during the season or in the lead up to an important event? Performed routinely on those who engage in regular physical activity, maintenance sports massage are an integral part of training regimes that reduce risk of injury and allow you to perform at the top of your game.
The technique focuses on tight and sore muscles, stiffness in joints and areas previously susceptible to injury, such as soft tissue which carries unnecessary tensions/adhesion and is more likely to experience strains and tears. Additionally, soft tissue tension can also lead to secondary injuries and joint pain. One of the tools our massage therapist have at their disposal is Trigger Point Release therapy (also known as Neuromuscular Technique). This technique can be particular effective for muscle cramps and spasms. A prolonged pressure is applied to help improve the communication between the brain and muscle in order to release the spasm, allowing the muscle to relax.
What to expect
Before your treatment, we listen to your massage needs and concerns, discuss any information regarding your health history and give you the opportunity to ask
During your massage we engage in a regular dialogue to better understand your pain threshold and balance the “pain-pleasure” experience.
You’re given time and private space to undress. Your level of undress is always your decision and should be based upon your comfort levels. Blankets and towels are provided and used to cover areas that aren’t being massaged. If, for any reason, you’d prefer to avoid particular parts of your body being exposed, you just need to let us know.
We tailor every massage to your personal needs. This involves planning in advance and also at times implementing various techniques such as Trigger Point therapy* and breathing exercises.
*Trigger Point therapy identifies the area of muscle spasm or tension, which is often located in the belly of the muscle then applying a constant pressure followed by slow release.
During the first part of your massage, your muscles are always warmed up and prepared with light touch methods. This is followed by stripping and friction techniques to break down “knots” and adhesion. These techniques use a combination of kneading and stroking, with varying degrees of pressure.
We will review progress with you at the beginning and end of every session.
